A tight tree lined
18 hole course set on ancient common land. |
|
This course is quite short at under 5500yds,
but that's for a par of 68, with 5 par 3's all of which are challenging.
There are no bunkers, but there is plenty of heather, ferns and natural
ups & downs, and the fairways are well lined with trees. There
is no chance of finding another fairway if you miss your own.
The first hole, Elcho, is a long par 3 and the fairway is a small
area around the green. For most of the year there is long grass, heather
or ferns in between.
Big Ravine at 258yds is the shortest par 4 and the only hole with
water, but the larger hazard is definitely the ravine itself.
The 5th hole, Queen's Mere is another long par 3 at 243yds.
Hole 7, Paradise is a good hole, downhill then uphill steep sloping
fairways and the green surrounded by big beautiful pine trees.
Caesar's Well is the shortest hole, 135yds. Overhanging trees down
the right, long grass and rough ground everywhere. The green is bowl
shaped and protected by grassy mounds in front. Very nice.
Long Hole the only par 5, uphill with wide fairways, it's cut through
the middle by a ditch, a horse path, then a 15 foot high ridge.
On Hope Grant, the longest par 4, the 2nd shot is often from bare
and bumpy lies. The green is below you and also slopping away front
to back.
Nest is a short par 4 but the tee shot is tight and the green is well
protected by trees and mounds.
Spinney is very tight and you can't see the green from the tee. There
are large trees and rolling ground between you and the pin.
The course finishes well with Windmill a 327yd par 4. Tee off over
a smaller ravine with the green a 90° dogleg left.
A well laid out course with very good greens and tee boxes.
You are playing on a public common and other users have right of way,
but this a well established course and your play is seldom interupted.
Also you must wear a pillar box red upper garment.
Wimbledon Common and London Scottish share the same course, they each
start from a different hole.
After your round you can get a good hot or cold meal at the Windmill
Cafe & Restraurant, next to the club house, which has a members
bar. |
