| Prince's is the higher and hillier of the two courses at Richmond
Park, it is 5,900 yards, for a par of 69. You start off with two par 3's in the first three holes, followed by a testing downhill par 4 with OB on the left. You are up quite high at this point, and the views across the park could be the perfect distraction to keep you relaxed. The only water of consequence on this course is on hole 6. It's well placed as most men will need a good tee shot to easily get over, but longer hitting ladies will find it with a driver. A good shot is needed to get on the green from this side of the water, with bunkers in front left and right. Hole 7 is a memorable dogleg right with OB on the right, a magnet for a slice, with a nice green surrounded by mounds and (now only one) bunker. The par 3 Hole 10 is an uphill shot to a green protected at front left by a large bunker, and on the right by a ridge that falls away, behind the green it slopes down into brambles and nettles. Hole 15 is another uphill fairway with 3 wide bunkers cutting across it, in front of the green the fairway dips and the green is raised, so it's hard to judge the distance for your second shot. The green itself continues to rise from front to back. The course finishes off very well, with hole 16, a late test for your driving nerve. The large undulating green is well protected, with bunkers in front and falling ground to the left, if your going to miss, do it on the right, even then you're 5' above the green. 17 is an awkward par 4, uphill with a sneaky bunker front left, you can't see it when you hit your second shot. Ending with the only par 5, although there is OB on the left, there is plenty of room so the longer hitter has a real birdie chance here. Not a long course but it has good shape, great views and I like it. The 14 bay driving range is adequate. There is a good practice chipping and putting area with two greens on different levels and two sand bunkers. This course closes 1/2 hr before the park gates are locked, and the restaurant closes before the course, so check your timing. |
